I did it (my way)

I did it.
I graduated.
In the words of my mum, I “did it my way.”
In 2006, in my final year of school, I made the decision that I wasn’t going to university.  My school was horrified.  Not go to university?  This would reflect badly upon them.  They did not care about me, about how it was not right for me to go to university.  If I had gone to uni when I finished school, at just eighteen, I am confident I would not have finished.
I hated my last two years at school.  I did terribly in my A Levels, because I felt everything was forced upon me.  That style of learning was not for me.  The stifling atmosphere, where pristine uniforms were the main concern, and subject choices were limited to academic topics that did not interest me remotely.
So I left school with rubbish qualifications and went to college for a year.  Less pressure and rules must have helped, because I finished the one-year course with a distinction.  I got a job in a children’s daycare, “for now”.  Two years later, I was still there.  Sure, I had been given the responsibility of a supervisory role, but I was slowly going brain dead.  Don’t get me wrong here – it was a good job, but it was not for me.  My brain needs space to be creative and be challenged.  I wasn’t getting that with the standard routine that childcare demands.
So, after considering a few options, I decided to apply for university, just as all my friends from school were graduating.  I was really nervous that I was getting myself into a crazy amount of debt, committing to three years of full-time study and moving to a different country, just because I felt itchy to change something.  What if I hated the course, or worse, what if I wasn’t capable of the work?  It was all a huge risk.  I loved writing and everything about books, but what if this was all a stupid idea and I just had no talent?
Turns out, it was worth it.
On Saturday I graduated with First Class Honours in Creative Writing with English.
Sure, I won’t walk away from this course and straight into a job.  That’s not the kind of degree I have.  But I have learned so much, it was undoubtedly the right course for me to take.

Some people know what they want to do with their lives, and some don’t.  Some go to university right after school, some go to college, some go into employment, some have children, some go travelling, and some don’t know what to do.  And that is okay.  It is much better to take the time to work out what is right for you, than feel pressured to rush into something totally wrong for you.  It only took me three years to figure the start of my path out, for some it may take longer, or for some it may not take any time at all, but just do what is right for you.  Don’t let someone tell you what they think you should do, just because they are older than you, or don’t want to ruin their sparkling school-leaver records.  It’s your life, not theirs.
And this is the beginning of the next stage of mine.

Thank you to my wonderful parents for encouraging me to do this my way.

It is doubly sweet to graduate alongside the person you love :)

I’m not sure where this quote originates, but it sums this all up extremely neatly for me right now:

Photos from Paris.

I am still alive (just about, anyway).  Final year of university is hectic; I did know this in advance but it has been more heavy than I anticipated.
Anyway, I still have tons of photos from Paris that I never shared, so I’m just going to bombard you with some of those today.  Enjoy :)

Jay at the Louvre.  We didn’t go in to the actual museum because the queue was ridiculous, and we didn’t care that much about the Mona Lisa (perhaps if it had been free we would have cared more, haha)

I said “Do something funny”

Everywhere we went we saw people with baguettes, just casually eating them on the metro or walking down the street.  I was so excited to go to a boulangerie and get a baguette for lunch.  We sat down in the Tuileries and had lunch… and almost froze, haha.

It was beautiful though.

I think she was trying to touch the leaves…?

Not even posed, I was just leaning on this thing while Jay took some photos of the gardens.  When I walked away my back was covered in white dust.  I have no idea what the ‘thing’ is though, does anyone know?

Trying to work out how to get to a metro station.

Notre Dame.

You can see me at the bottom there.
You weren’t supposed to take photos inside, but everybody was doing it anyway.  I did take some but it was so dark that they just didn’t come out well.  Then evening mass started, so I put my camera away.  I couldn’t believe how many people sat down to watch mass as if it was an entertainment show and took photos of the priest.

Apparently I am the image of my mum in this photo.  Some of my friends, and Facebook face recognition thought so (anyone else find that recognition thing really creepy? I hate it!)

Made in China.

Outside the Centre du Pompidou.  This is where my phone got stolen a few days later, as I sat exactly like this.  (So yes, I had my phone stolen twice this summer)

Inside an exhibition.  Not really sure what it was all about but it was cool to climb inside and walk around, instead of the usual ‘Do Not Cross the Barrier.  Do Not Touch’.

This one was about global warming.  I love globes, so this fascinated me.

By this point we were pretty exhausted, as we’d been up since that morning, and done loads of walking.  So we headed back to the hotel, but stopped off at the Louvre to see it lit up-

Have a great weekend :)

Getting there.

I have almost finished my last assignment (due at midday tomorrow).
I have an exam next week, and then I am officially finished second year.
Crazy.

I have been living in the library since I got back after Easter.

These were my library supplies for today.

Today I am loving colour.

It is sunny, I had a productive evening in the library and my favourite for dinner (Caesar Salad).

I need 8000 words.

If I had somewhere like this to be, my two Creative Writing assignments would come naturally, right?

Essay.

Sorry for my silence, I have an essay due on Tuesday and it’s really not fun.
I am really struggling with this one – any experts on Rochester and Behn are very welcome to assist me!

I want new clothes.

I’m not a follower of fashion in any way, I have got absolutely no style (or money), and yet I constantly want to change my wardrobe.  I’ve never been in Urban Outfitters, but I clicked a Twitter link which led me to their website, and now I want lots of new clothes.

Oh I want money.  Not a lot (unless you’re offering it), but just a little!

What are you reading?

I am currently reading two books at once, both I am not enjoying but both must be read.
I am a little (a lot) behind with my reading for my module ‘Single Author Study’ (the author being H. G. Wells).
This is mainly because I have a lot of other work to do for my course, but also because these two books aren’t novels, they are something like a long long essay mixed with a fictional discussion type thing.

The first one is ‘A Modern Utopia’…

This book is so disappointing; I really felt it had so much potential, the whole concept is fascinating, but it just dies a horrible literary death.  If you’ve ever read Sir Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’, Wells’ version will be a big let down.

The second book is ‘The Shape of Things To Come’…

I can’t say too much about this book because I haven’t read enough of it yet, but it appears to be going the same way as the previous one.  There’s no dialogue in it (which is funny because in the other half of my degree I am learning about the importance of dialogue in writing), which makes it incredibly tedious to wade through.

I miss reading books out of choice, not for a module at uni.

What are you reading at the moment?
